The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office could begin bringing criminal charges against employers who repeatedly or intentionally deprive workers of pay as early as this summer under a new agreement with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries.

 

The move comes as a growing number of district attorneys and state attorneys general across the country have started to prosecute employers who deny workers wages they are owed. Their aim is to crack down on the widespread practice sometimes termed wage theft and upend the historic lack of consequences for employers who deny employees pay.
