D.A. Mike Schmidt's First Term

Accomplishments

  • Advocated to successfully amend Measure 110. Mike was a leader in the effort to pass HB 4002, which aims to end public drug use, support addiction treatment programs, and open 24/7 emergency detox centers.

  • Built a new Homicide Unit & hired more prosecutors. Mike has focused his office's resources on serious violent crime. He has also partnered with OHSU to address root causes of gun violence in the community.

  • Supported crime victims & survivors. Mike led the effort to pass a new law that allows domestic violence survivors' testimony to be used without further traumatizing them by forcing them into court. And he secured new resources to fund diversion programs for survivors.

  • Worked to get guns off our streets. Mike successfully supported changing state law to ban "ghost guns," despite opposition from Republican politicians in Salem.

  • Created an Auto Theft Task Force. Through new partnerships with police and other law enforcement, the DA's office is building cases and prosecuting repeat car thieves.

  • Formed a Retail Theft Task Force. By working with police and business owners, Mike's office is building cases against organized retail theft operations.

  • Promoted a diverse and inclusive office. Mike's management team is the most diverse in Multnomah County history. He has elevated people of color to key leadership positions, and nearly two-thirds of the people he has promoted are women.

  • Secured new resources to fight bias crimes. Multnomah County prosecutes more bias crimes than any other county in Oregon, and the DA’s office received federal resources to fund a new bias crimes investigator and a new bias crimes prosecutor focused on advocating for crime victims and holding perpetrators accountable.

  • Established a new Justice Integrity Unit. This new unit works with the community and the legal system to correct past injustices and rebuild public trust.

  • Fostered restorative justice programs. Mike has implemented new policies that focus on getting victims what they need to heal. This means empowering crime victims to have a say in what accountability looks like in their specific case.

  • Brought back neighborhood prosecutors. Mike knows that different neighborhoods have difference issues and concerns. That's why he brought back neighborhood-focused prosecutors through the Multnomah DA’s Access Attorney Program (MAAP).

  • Brought transparency to the office's data. Its website now publishes prosecution rates and racial disparities for different criminal charges, so we know how policies affect diverse communities.

  • Protected immigrant communities. With a new office policy, Mike is ensuring that immigration consequences are fully considered during all sentence recommendations.
